SYNCED is a rogue-looter shooter set in the near future of our world, where nanotechnology has become the backbone of civilization. In the wake of a cataclysm known as the Collapse, the nanomachines have turned against their creators, consuming humans to propagate themselves and transforming into deadly nanos. In this apocalypse, players take on the role of a Runner, brave fortune-seekers who scour the Meridian for the valuable nano-energy substance known as nerva. Players will team up in squads of three to encounter intense PvE and PvP battles. It is a live game.

Below is a small sample of work that has been featured in Synced Season Zero, Rift Chasers, including the character I developed as part of the seasonal narrative.

Audio: Sleep Study

"This sleep study is bogus. Neil gives presentations in his underwear. Sheila finds out she missed a class for an entire semester. And somehow, I’m the only one who dreams of murder.

Dr. Baumann thinks that my chip is auto encrypting, because I never remember them in the morning. But he watches our dreams every night, as they happen. Sometimes, he even crawls inside. Just to observe, he says.

He isn’t worried about me yet, because all my victims are faceless. I keep thinking about that old Shinar slogan, “Making every dream a reality.” What does that mean for someone like me?"

Audio: Beginner’s Luck

You were right, Gardner, beginner’s luck is one hell of a drug. Had me charging into a Goliath chamber like I’d been doing this forever. You should have seen me, wielding my shotgun just like you taught me. Dropped nano after nano after nano. I figured they’d stop eventually, but they just kept coming.

That’s when I realized my comms were down, and Nick and Jaymi weren’t with me. Managed to squirrel myself away in this safehouse, but the Surge Density is about to peak.

[Laughs] I used to be an accountant. Damn good one, too. Ran risk assessments all day every day, and I was never wrong. Guess I should have stuck to that profession. Well, Gardner, it was a real pleasure getting to know you. May your next recruit have a better handle on their luck.

Written Memory Fragments

  • MEMORY FRAGMENT: Cosmic Competition

At Shinar, we count ourselves lucky. Not only do we create and facilitate teams who continue to pioneer the limits of what’s possible, but those teams are made up of everyday people exactly like you. Hardworking, dedicated, driven folks who are passionate about moving the lines of what’s possible. That is why we are offering one hundred places aboard the Ark-1 in our custodial division.

These positions require the focus of passionate individuals; you will be tasked with creating meaningful entertainment, balanced indoor design, and, above all, pioneering the comfort of our other guests. It is our pleasure to serve the lucky few who will continue to seed the dreams of humanity. We believe that with your can do attitude and hands-on involvement, the Ark-1 will become a home.

Details can be found in your Morpheus Mimir Hub. We look forward to pioneering forever with you.

  • MEMORY FRAGMENT: Virologist

I have always believed that polyps were perfect specimens of disease. Each electric green pustule is full of thousands of perfect copies, and that movement they do, so like breathing, allows them the momentum to replicate. They appear only in spaces once crowded by humans so that they can spread to new hosts with ease.

But since my last expedition, I have a new understanding of them. You see, I discovered a hairline fracture somewhere in my suit as we entered the building. Rather than abandoning the mission, I figured I’d take this as an opportunity to test the effects of their defense mechanisms.

Except the gas wasn’t defensive at all; it was an olive branch. As it wrapped around my cells, I became a waxwork corpse, unable to move while the room curled around me. The polyps wanted to help evolve me, and I was to welcome it. No more would I have to worry about the nanos spawning in our homes, or navigating the people I’d lost to the Collapse. The polyps were my escape.

Had the sergeant not pulled me out, I would have completed my transformation by now. If you let me go back, I still can. I assure you, they really are perfect creatures. It would be an honor to become one someday.
